If you want to flash custom ROMs or mods on your Samsung Galaxy S5, or modify it in anyway, you biggest problem will be its encryption file system or EFS. The EFS of the Galaxy series is very vulnerable and flashing an invalid firmware, mod or custom recovery can affect your phone's modem.

EFS issues will cause the phone's IMEI to go null or just completely mess it up. This means you won't be able to use SIM cards on the device and won't catch signals from carriers.

Navigate to the EFSbackupRestoreAroma.zip file and select it. Moreover, the next screen you will have is the Aroma installer. You may backup EFS on either internal or external storage. Here I'll take backup on both the storage. Click the Next option to start the EFS backup process. It'll take a minute to complete. Finally, press t'Backup' button and you will see that all EFS information has been saved on your phone as well as your desktop. PC backups you will find in the EFS Professional folder inside the 'EFSProBackup' folder, and its format will be as follows: 'SM-N90222210.tar.gz' in the case that your phone is Galaxy Note 3.

Backup & Restore EFS on All Variants of Samsung Galaxy S5:

  1. Make sure your Galaxy S5 is rooted.
  2. Download here the EFS Backup & Restore Tool. Extract it onto a desktop and get EFS.bat file.
  3. Enable USB debugging mode on the Galaxy S5 by going to Settings > General/More > About Device > Tap Build Number for 7 times. This will get the developer options enabled.
  4. Go back to the General / More tab found in Settings. Now open Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging.
  5. When USB debugging mode is enabled, connect device to PC with original data cable.
  6. Open the EFS.bat file that extracted in step 2.
  7. When the bat file opens up the tool, you will find the following 4 options:
  8. <1> [All LTE Variant] EFS Partition Backup
  9. <2> [All LTE Variant] EFS Partition Restore
  10. <3> [SM-G900H] EFS Partition Backup
  11. <4> [SM-G900H] EFS Partition Backup
  12. <5> Exit
  • With your device connected and with enabled USB debugging mode, enter the numeric key of your choice.
  • If you have an LTE variant, press 1 or 2. Keep in mind that except for Exynos variant SM-G900H, all other variants are LTE. Only make 3rd or 4th selection if your device's model is SM-G900GH.
  • When enter the key, it will perform the action. Keep an eye on the phone as you might be prompted for USB debugging permissions or root permissions.
  • When backed up, you will be able to restore as well. Backup will be stored on device's storage or PC.

Here is another method that you can use, but it only works with three variants: Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900A/F/H or T.

  1. Root your Galaxy S5.
  2. Download Samsung Tool App. here
